Twelve-year-old Miguel lives in the small, fictional Mexican village of Santa Cecilia. Miguel dreams of becoming a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, a popular singer-songwriter and film star who died when he was crushed by a bell in a live concert. However, because Miguel’s great-great-grandfather left his family to achieve his musical dreams, his family has banned music for generations. Because of the ban, the only relative Miguel likes is his great-grandmother Coco. On Día de Muertos, after Miguel inadvertently damages Mama Imelda’s ofrenda with Miguel’s great-great grandfather’s face ripped out, he finds a bent section of the photo revealing that his great-great grandfather used a guitar similar to De la Cruz. This causes Miguel to believe that he and his family are direct descendants of De la Cruz.

When Miguel attempts to participate in a talent contest using a guitar he kept away from his family, his grandmother destroys it and he leaves. Looking for a way to participate in the talent contest, Miguel infiltrates De la Cruz’s mausoleum to steal his guitar and use it in the contest. However, he becomes a type of ghost unable to be seen or heard by the living except for Dante, a street dog he pets often. In the cemetery Miguel meets his deceased relatives who are surprised that Miguel can see them and is there with them.

Coco VR is clearly a tie-in promotion, but it’s more substantial and interactive than Disney’s early VR work or its recent film promotions. After a hasty introduction from protagonist Miguel, it drops you into Coco’s land of the dead, where a resident tells you to get ready for showtime. You inhabit a skeletal body with the Rift’s head tracking and motion controllers, donning various dapper outfits and hairstyles in front of a mirror. Once you’re dressed, you can wander around the afterlife’s town square, before catching a train through the city and performing a musical number.

You can go through Coco VR alone, but Oculus and Pixar are promoting it as a social space, where up to four players can hang out together. Some areas don’t benefit much from extra people: there’s a museum of concept art, for example, and an “outdoor” theater playing a deleted scene from the movie. (If you haven’t seen the film, these might generally be more confusing than compelling.) And the train trip is simply gorgeous, winding through bright, floating neighborhoods in the land of the dead.

The central charcter is Miguel, a 12-year-old who dreams of becoming a musician and is voiced by Anthony Gonzalez. He meets a trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal) and sets off to find out the real story behind Miguel’s family history in the Land of the Dead.

Coco, a movie set in Mexico during the country’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday and featuring several Mexican voice actors, has performed extremely well in Mexico since its release in the region on October 27. While Coco‘s success in Mexico is not at all unexpected, the movie has already set a box office record by pulling in $43 million after less than a month in theaters, according to Variety.

Other members of the voice cast include Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, Sofía Espinosa, Luis Valdez, Lombardo Boyar, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, Selene Luna, Alfonso Arau, Herbert Siguenza, Octavio Solis, Gabriel Iglesias, Cheech Marin, and Blanca Araceli.

Coco follows a young boy, Miguel, who loves music and journeys to the Land of the Dead, where he learns about his family’s history and the traditions around Día de los Muertos. The movie offers no shortage of lively musical numbers featuring the voices of actors such as Anthony Gonzalez (as Miguel), Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, and Ana Ofelia Murguía.
